FAQ recrutement

CAN I APPLY FOR A JOB AT HI EVEN IF I HAVE NO EXPERIENCE OF WORKING IN AID AND DEVELOPMENT?

Yes, of course, if you think you have the kind of experience or skills we are looking for. Then it will all depend on your adaptability and motivation to work with us!

WHEN CAN I EXPECT A REPLY TO MY APPLICATION?

You will receive an automatic acknowledgement of receipt when you send in your application. This acknowledgement specifies that it takes about 3 weeks to process your application, depending on the position.

CAN I APPLY FOR MORE THAN ONE POSITION AT A TIME?

Yes. The positions you apply for may be managed by different recruiters, but your applications will be visible to all of them so they can coordinate and prioritise them. However, we would ask you to make choices that are coherent with your profile, experience and skills so that we can get to know you better and understand your motivations.

IF MY APPLICATION IS REJECTED, CAN I FIND OUT WHY?

If you receive a rejection notification after an interview with one of our recruiters, you can ask us to explain why we chose not to move your application forward. We undertake to reply.

If you are looking for further guidance, try visiting the school/university forums in which we regularly take part.

CAN I APPLY FOR AN INTERNSHIP ON YOUR FIELD PROGRAMMES?

All our internship offers are given on our job vacancies page, including internships in the field. We only accept interns for the internships published here.

DO YOU NEED TO BE PROFICIENT IN ENGLISH TO APPLY FOR A JOB WITH HI?

Most of our positions require English, but not all of them. If English is a requirement, this will be mentioned in the job advertisement.

However, English does facilitate mobility within the organisation.

3 questions to Marlène Dussauge
Operations coordinator in Yemen, international staff

What is your job with our organisation and what does it involve exactly?

I’m the operations coordinator for Yemen (for a limited period of around three months). My job involves supporting the operations teams and ensuring coordination between operations and the technical team. I am in charge of drafting proposals and amendments and help update HI's operational strategy for Yemen.

How was your induction into the organisation and more specifically into your team in these times of covid-19?

I was working for HQ from home at the time, so most of the briefings I needed for my new posting were organised and held remotely.  I had the support of the geographical division’s deputy director at headquarters to help me get started.

What did you think of our recruitment process?

As I’d already worked for HI and had past experience of this type of position, the recruitment process was pretty quick.

3 questions to Vincent Lemoine

Head of donor loyalty projects for HI’s national association, France

What is your job with our organisation and what does it involve exactly?

To give you a bit of context, HI’s fundraising teams work with three main categories of donors:  newly recruited donors, donors who have been giving regularly for a number of years and donors who make a monthly direct debit payment.

As head of donor loyalty projects, I’m in charge of the second category, what we call “loyal donors”. In other words, I see to it that these donors keep coming back. My objective is to ensure that someone who has already donated to us continues to do so every year, or signs up to the direct debit option.

To borrow from an old expression, our moto could be “Once a donor, always a donor”!

How was your induction into the organisation and more specifically into your team in these times of covid 19?

As luck would have it, I began working at HI on Monday 16 March 2020, the day the lockdown was announced. I just had time to meet a few colleagues and grab a computer! The rest of my induction was done remotely.

Once I was over my initial nerves and the feeling that I only understood half of what was being said in the meetings (internal jargon!), my induction went very well. The e-learning modules were a quick way of helping me to familiarise myself with the organisation’s activities. Through Skype/Teams meetings, I discovered colleagues who were considerate and happy to answer my questions and help me get a handle on my files. Now we can go back to the office, it’s great to meet the people behind the voices I have been working with for the last few months! It’s a bit like a second induction period.

What did you think of our recruitment process?

At the time of writing, it feels like ages ago!

I remember my recruitment as being an interesting and comprehensive interview process. I appreciated the opportunity to ask lots of questions and meet colleagues from the fundraising teams who were experts in what I’m doing know. One thing I remember from an internship I did with a recruitment firm is that “a good recruitment process should be well-paced” with each party taking the time it needs to reflect, but without unnecessary delays or indecision. This pretty much sums up my experience of being recruited by HI.
