After a recent amputation, Salam is ready to receive a prosthesis.
Last March, one night, 22-year-old Mohammed Salam Saif Murshid Al-Qubati was walking in the Al-Kutayb area on a routine fishing trip.
Then a landmine exploded. Mohammed found himself thrown to the ground. In those initial moments, shock completely numbed his physical pain.
Looking around, he saw his two friends thrown in different directions — one of them with scratches on his leg. But as Mohammed looked down at himself, his left leg was bleeding heavily and his right leg was completely unresponsive due to a severe fracture.
Disregarding their own wounds, his two friends — with the help of kind-hearted bystanders — rushed Mohammed to the nearest hospital. There, he underwent emergency life-saving surgery, which resulted in the amputation of his left leg below the knee.
The surgery marked the beginning of a personal battle to walk again. He sought help at the Physical Therapy Centre at Al-Thawra Hospital, led by HI.
The centre provided him with a wheelchair and a commode chair, restoring his mobility and independence and filling his heart with immense joy.
A resident psychologist provided Mohammed with vital emotional support. By listening to his fears, boosting his morale, and easing his psychological pain, the therapist helped him overcome his trauma.
Healing this fracture is the essential first step that will allow Mohammed to bear weight again. Salam is currently in the recovery and rehabilitation phase. Once his right leg has fully healed and he is able to stand on it, HI will move forward with the prosthesis fitting.
