This year, rather than simply marking an anniversary, we are celebrating 20 years of a bold strategic decision: to unite Handicap International / Humanity & Inclusion and Atlas Logistique around a shared conviction: to be effective, humanitarian action must be able to reach those who are most isolated – and therefore often the most vulnerable.

Meeting the most urgent needs depends not only on what we know how to do, but also on our ability to reach these populations quickly and effectively in the most complex contexts.

At the time, this decision was a bold one, but HI already recognised the strength of collective action. The collaboration with Action Nord Sud in the 1990s and the success of the Ottawa Treaty had demonstrated the potential of alliances. With Atlas Logistique, a new dimension emerged: logistics was not merely a support function. It was becoming a lever for humanitarian impact!

Atlas Logistique was – and still is – a logistics organisation dedicated to helping others, guided by efficiency and the common good. Twenty years on, this legacy is more alive than ever. Faced with a proliferation of crises, climate change that is transforming needs, and access constraints, our areas of expertise have expanded: emergency preparedness, information management, temperature-controlled storage, and supply chain support. This ability to bring together different areas of expertise has become one of our strengths.

Through this merger, we have thus embedded within our organisation an approach focused on serving the entire humanitarian community, long before the term H2H – Humanitarian-to-Humanitarian – became widely used. Today, the results speak for themselves: 10 years of partnership with @UNDAC, operations in some of the most challenging environments – where security and supply chain issues are critical, such as in Darfur – as well as support for humanitarian organisations of all sizes, including more than a hundred as part of our work in Ukraine. These are all achievements of which we are collectively proud.

The partnership between Handicap International and Atlas Logistique also reminds us that no single area of expertise is sufficient on its own when faced with the complexity of humanitarian crises. It is by combining our expertise, sharing knowledge and working with others that we build the most effective responses.

To mark this anniversary, I would like to pay tribute to all those who have made this journey possible!

Twenty years on, this partnership has lost none of its strength. Forged by experience and strengthened by action, it continues to fuel our commitment to more accessible, effective and collaborative humanitarian action – serving affected populations and all those working alongside them.
