Venezuela | PUBLISHED ON January 26th 2026

On the night of 25 to 26 January, exactly two weeks after Alberto Trentini's release, we learned that Rafael Ubiel Hernández Machado had also been released from El Rodeo I prison in the suburbs of Caracas, after being detained for more than 14 months.

Rafael is the taxi driver who was arrested at the same time as our colleague Alberto Trentini while driving him in the course of his work in November 2024. Both men were imprisoned and detained in particularly difficult conditions.

Upon his release, Rafael was reunited with his wife. As soon as his release was announced, we were able to quickly inform Alberto of his fellow prisoner's release. Alberto immediately expressed his joy and deep relief at the news.

A long road to recovery and reconstruction now lies ahead for Alberto and Rafael. After more than fourteen months of anxiety, uncertainty and deprivation of liberty, they will need time, care and peace of mind to rebuild themselves, both physically and psychologically.

For them, for their families, and for the entire HI community, this release marks the end of a particularly painful period of waiting, worry and constant mobilisation.

We would like to warmly thank all the HI teams who have worked tirelessly and shown solidarity throughout these last few months. Your support, commitment and patience have made a difference.

Today, we are all sharing this moment of relief and emotion.
