HI is assisting the Making It Work (MIW) "Gender and Disability" project that fights violence against women and girls with disabilities in Africa. MIW promotes their empowerment by supporting grassroots organizations and by conducting evidence-based advocacy at all levels.
Nigeria, Africa's most populous country with 224 million inhabitants, is at a critical crossroads and is faced with numerous economic, social and humanitarian challenges. The country has major social disparities, particularly in terms of access to education and healthcare.
People with disabilities in Nigeria face considerable barriers in all aspects of life. Many are excluded from the labour market, and education for children with disabilities is often neglected. Despite a certain amount of progress, public policies are insufficient to guarantee the full participation of people with disabilities in social and economic life.
Gender equality is also a major challenge in the country. Women suffer from deep-seated discrimination due to cultural and religious norms; teenage and forced marriages remain common; and domestic violence is widespread.
Making It Work is a project developed by HI that combines gender and disability issues. It aims to eliminate discrimination and violence against women and girls with disabilities by defending their rights. HI has been implementing the Making It Work project in Nigeria since 2018, working alongside Inclusive Friends Association, a partner organisation.
HI is an independent and impartial aid organisation working in situations of poverty and exclusion, conflict and disaster. We work alongside people with disabilities and vulnerable populations, taking action and bearing witness in order to respond to their essential needs, improve their living conditions and promote respect for their dignity and fundamental rights.
